openAE
In this blog's "links widget" there is a link to openAE, a site worth visiting. (Hmm, back when I was in college that last sentence would have been gibberish.) The folks there are about to release the next version of OpenDatcom, which is a GUI interface for the U.S. Air Force's Digital DATCOM. DATCOM was created to aid in estimating the aerodynamic qualities of airplanes based on their geometry. This is very useful for making JSBSim configurations, however few people have been willing to deal with the user-unfriendliness of DATCOM. OpenDatcom may be the solution!

Hey Dave, I'm one of the administrators and creators of openAE. First of, thanks for creating a link to us, we are very excited at the possible solutions our GUI for Datcom will bring to projects such as yours.
ReplyDeleteI have actualy been fiddling around specifically with the JSBSim interface since the prototype and all the output data from Datcom plugged back into FlightGear really does make a difference (in my opinion). I am very curious to see what the actual pilots which have flown the aircraft think. Release of the completely re-done interface by Brandon is tonight @ 10 PM eastern time | http://openae.org/downloads .
I would be very interested in hearing your opinion of the final product.

Oh, and sorry for not being able to get you a demo copy before-hand but the whole thing just came together last minute :(.
ReplyDeleteI'm still currently building a linux version of Datcom to actually make it cross-platform, but with little luck. Hopefully I will be able to slap something together before the release later tonight.
